The Futurama Festival 2021 is an indoor music festival based around the Invisible Wind Factory, Make Arts Centre, Ten Streets Social and North Shore Troubadour in the Stanley Dock / Regent Road area of Liverpool. There will be four stages of music across the three venues with food and drink outlets and a market space for merchandise, record stalls and signing sessions.
In 2016, the people who previously ran the Kazimier in Liverpool took on an old disused factory and created The Invisible Wind Factory – ‘A cultural theme park of the future’. A huge factory space with an art deco style feel due to its decor and lighting installations, combined with a slightly dystopian vibe, somewhat reminiscent of Fritz Lang’s ‘Metropolis.’ The perfect venue for Futurama Festival. Over the past few years, they’ve put on some spectacular gigs and club nights. 2020 was looking fantastic with Flaming Lips, Mark Lanegan, Angel Olsen and Caribou all booked to play! Sadly COVID-19 and the subsequent lock down put everything on hold. 2021 is now vitally important not just for Futurama and The Invisible Wind factory but also for the local and national music economy as a whole!
The Wind Factory has two areas for bands to play, the main auditorium and the substation downstairs plus a big outside courtyard which is brilliant in hot weather.
Next door to the Wind factory is Make Arts Centre, a brilliant new space with two big rooms, one for bands and one for market stalls selling merchandise, records and signing sessions. Make is connected to Wind Factory via a walk-through so you won’t need a pass out to get there. Just pop through the back of the Wind Factory and you’ll come to an outside area where various food outlets will be selling all sort of tasty cuisine, including vegetarian and vegan options, in wonderfully named vans. Make has its own cafe which will be open till late afternoon. It has a warehouse/gallery studio feel to it, the sort of place the Velvet Underground would have gigged while Warhol would screen print his entourage! A happening event space.
Ten Streets Social, is a new venue which does amazing food and drink as well as having an excellent area for bands to play. It’s a welcome addition to the Ten Streets Regeneration Area and is located in the road adjacent to the Wind Factory. You will have to leave the Wind Factory complex for this one but you don’t have to cross any busy roads as it is so close. It’s a family run business with a lovely atmosphere, perfect for the AF Gang to host the up and coming stage for the weekend.
We have just added North Shore Troubadour to the set of venues as well. North Shore Troubadour is one of the hidden gems of the Liverpool underground venue scene. Dark & atmospheric with a kicking PA System, it’s held many festivals, bands and club nights and will be absolutely perfect to host the Planet X stage for the weekend. There is a smoking and barbecue area and even another venue space inside where we might put electronic stuff as it would work really well for artists with just minimal equipment. It’s just a couple of minutes walk from the IWF and it’s well worth making the effort…you will not be disappointed!
All the locations have a fantastic feel to them. The Invisible Wind Factory is well known by local gig goers who love the atmosphere, layout and their must-see gigs. It’s a classic venue that’s developing a growing a unrivalled reputation for touring bands. North Shore Troubadour already has a great reputation. While Make and Ten Streets Social are both exciting new spaces they both compliment the Wind Factory perfectly. We think that all three venues being in such close proximity creates the perfect hub space for the return of the Futurama. Especially when you consider each of the venues are independently run, put great events on for all the right reasons and are genuinely sound people too!
