Futurama 2 – 1980

FUTURAMA 2 Queens Hall, Leeds Saturday 13th and 14th September 1980

The Futurama 2 was to prove the most successful of the Futuramas and John Keenan’s favourite. Many problems of the first year had been ironed out and John, at his own expense, used a TV production company to film the whole weekend. It caught some remarkable performance by the likes of Siouxsie, Athletico Spizz Energi, Altered Images, Young Marble Giants and the Bunnymen. Most of this Futurama footage is on YouTube but sadly U2 denied permission because a certain singer thought he looked fat! What is also amazing about the footage is that in 1980 people at the festival were starting to look different and developing styles that would define the 80’s for it’s fashion and hair styles.

A young Leeds synth band played early that day, called Soft Cell. Six months later they would have a number 1 hit ‘Tainted Love’, it would be the best-selling single of 1981. As for the fat singer and his band U2…who knows what happened to them? Vice Versa were one of the big 4 electronic bands from Sheffield with the Cabaret Voltaire, Human League and Clock DVA…they too would soon take their avant garde sound, mix it with glorious pop songs and a gold lame jacket as they became ABC. Frantic Elevators, were a punk band from Manchester fronted by a soulful ginger guy by the name of Mick Hucknall. Their song ‘Holding back the years’ would become a worldwide hit for his later band Simply Red. One name that stands out from the Sunday, more for his infamy these days than his songs, is Gary Glitter! After 2 days of often difficult and experimental music…his set made for a triumphant and fun finale. It’s easy to forget his stomp along classics had a great dance beat and influenced everyone from to the Human League to the KLF. ‘Rock’n’Roll’ anyone’?
